Protective role of breastfeeding

Exclusive breastfeeding for at least 3 to 4 months decreases the incidence of eczema in the first 2 years of life.8

Breastfeeding protects babies from developing allergies in two ways: firstly, by reducing or eliminating exposure to exogenous antigens such as those found in cows' milk formula or weaning food containing cows' milk,9 and, secondly, via the immunological compounds present in breast milk, which promote the development of healthy gut microbiota and confer immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory benefits.10

Benefits of lowering the risk of eczema

  • Reduces the number of babies who experience the discomfort of eczema
  • Reduces the number of families whose quality of life is affected by eczema
  • Reduces the burden of cost on the NHS, including the use of expensive specialist formulas and skin treatments
