Supporting parents to ensure adequate vitamin D intake

Remember, if a mother chooses to give her child infant/follow-on formula and they have more than 500ml a day, they will receive enough vitamin D so will not need to take any supplements. Currently, intakes of vitamin D are not sufficient during the first 1000 days of life, so your role in advising and educating parents is vital.

Look at the bullet points below for a reminder of good sources of vitamin D for not only infants and young children, but also for pregnant and breastfeeding women, which you can bring up during your conversations with parents.

  • Vitamin drops (infants) and supplements (pregnant/ breastfeeding women)
  • A bowl of bran flakes (fortified) (2.5µg/30g portion)*
  • One egg (whole, boiled) (approx 1.6μg)
  • Grilled salmon fillets (7.1μg/100g)
