The Department of Health and Social Care recommends that babies from birth to 1 year of age should have a daily supplement containing 8.5 to 10 micrograms of vitamin D, in the form of drops. Babies who are fed more than 500ml of infant formula a day do not need supplements as the formula is fortified with vitamin D.

Due to the range and volume of a complementary diet, it is difficult to obtain the required amount of vitamin D from diet alone.
