Supporting parents of babies with feeding issues

Feeding issues affect over 50% of babies in the first 6 months of life.1 They can occur in both breast and bottle-fed babies as their digestive systems develop. Worried parents and carers can look to pharmacy teams for advice on what to do.

Objectives
  • Understand the signs of common infant feeding issues including colic, reflux, milk allergy or intolerance
  • Be able to give advice to parents/carers of babies affected by feeding issues
  • Know when to refer parents/carers and their babies to their GP for further advice

The Department of Health recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months. If breastfeeding is not possible, a range of specialist milks are available to help alleviate the distress caused to babies who experience these feeding issues. Specialist milks should be used under medical supervision. Parents/carers should talk to a midwife, health visitor or GP if they have any concerns.
