GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare was the big winner at this year's SMART Awards, beating off fierce competition to claim the title of Best Overall Company when all the reader votes were totted up. The company also scooped the Best Support for Independent Pharmacy award.
Pharmacy director, Andy Gill, told Pharmacy Magazine that the Best Overall Company award €holds special recognition that we as a team are delivering the right solutions that deliver real value€.
At a time when the sector is facing tremendous uncertainty over the proposed Government funding cuts and plans for efficiencies, it was fantastic to celebrate the valuable support that OTC product manufacturers provide to pharmacy at the SMART Awards 2016, sponsored by Numark. Innovative new products as well as established pharmacy favourites triumphed at this year's event, which was held in February at the Birmingham Hilton Metropole.
HRA Pharma, manufacturer of EHC medicine ellaOne, collected the Best Product Launch award for what the SMART expert judging panel described as €a groundbreaking POM-to-P switch€, which €enhanced pharmacists' professional role as key providers of sexual health services in the community.€
The company also won the award for Best Education & Training, impressing the judges with €an outstanding piece of training€ which €made full use of the evidence base€ to support the launch of ellaOne. Other big winners on the night included TENA from SCA Hygiene, Durex from RB and Aveeno from Johnson & Johnson, who also won the award for Best Multiple Pharmacy Support and Best Pharmacy Student & Pre-Reg Support.
Bush Pharmacy triumphs!
Bush Pharmacy in Shepherd's Bush was the winner in the Best Independent Community Pharmacy Healthcare Innovation category, presented in association with the National Pharmacy Association.
Pharmacist Sailesh Pindolia was delighted to pick up the trophy. €This award is testament to all the hard work myself and my team have put in year after year. Having come runner-up in several other award schemes, it is so rewarding to receive this prestigious prize. I guess the old saying stands true, 'If you don't succeed, keep trying until you do'.
€We have stood by this ethos for over 35 years and it is what has driven us to evolve and keep up with the profession that has changed so much over the years.€
Bush Pharmacy provides a full range of clinical services from alcohol behavioural counselling to stroke screening. Sailesh hopes to soon launch an anticoagulation clinic so patients do not need to wait for days to get their INR checked, and can simply drop into the pharmacy and get their levels monitored and warfarin regimen changed accordingly.
€What we do at Bush Pharmacy is to some extent already being carried out in community pharmacies up and down the country, the difference being those pharmacies have not received the recognition they deserve,€ he said. €I hope us winning this award will inspire other pharmacies to keep moving onwards and upwards.€

The winner of this year's Terry Norris Award for Services to Pharmacy was Dennis Pay, managing director and founder of the Paydens Pharmacy group.
€Dennis Pay is the epitome of a community pharmacist €“ always there for the local community. His caring attitude and family values pervade his pharmacy group,€ said John D'Arcy, Numark managing director.
€Dennis and his pharmacy business have made an outstanding contribution to community pharmacy and he is a most deserving recipient of this award.€
