Here we provide a refresher and update on current thinking and practice in assessing whether a person has obesity or is overweight.
Body mass index (BMI) has been widely used for many years to assess whether a person is a healthy weight for their height (Table 1). Although it can be useful for many people, it is not always the most appropriate measure because it cannot differentiate between muscle and fat or take account of fat distribution.
