Safe sun messages

A new study underscores why pharmacists need to emphasise safe sun messages.

The study followed 108,916 Caucasian women in the US for about 20 years. Women who reported suffering at least five blistering sunburns when aged 15 to 20 years old were 68 per cent more likely to develop either basal cell carcinoma (BCC) or squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and 80 per cent more likely to develop melanoma than those who did not burn between these ages.

“Parents may need to be advised to pay more attention to protection from early-life sun exposure for their kids in order to reduce the likelihood of developing melanoma as they grow up,” said study author Abrar Qureshi, professor of dermatology at Brown University, Rhode Island.

“Older individuals should also be cautious with their sun exposure, because cumulative sun exposure increases skin cancer risk as well.” (Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev 2014: 23;1080-9)
