We can all benefit from networking with other pharmacists, says Mair Davies, chair of the Welsh Pharmacy Board

PHARMACY CAN be a very isolated profession at times but, through networking, we can share best practice, learn from others and develop and grow as professionals. RPS members have the opportunity to network nationally and via local practice forums (LPFs) €“ networks of RPS members, who come together at regular local meetings to share best practice, demonstrate local leadership, influence country boards and provide local peer-to-peer support. Each LPF is managed by a steering group, which decides on the programme of events and other activities.

Several Welsh LPFs have run dementia awareness sessions, giving members the opportunity to become a 'dementia friend'. Other LPFs are planning to follow suit. Another Welsh LPF has recently hosted a 'Developing tomorrow's pharmacists' event, aimed at pharmacists at the beginning of their careers.

Nurturing ground

LPFs are the nurturing grounds for future pharmacy leaders. If you join a LPF you will have the chance to have an influence at both a local and a national level and to explore how some of the bigger issues can be addressed at a local level. LPF steering group members in Wales want to increase uptake of the faculty in Wales and to encourage local research into pharmacy practice by building upon the success of the North Wales research symposium and the South Wales research and evaluation evening. Pharmacy, like all the professions, is often criticised for working in silos. LPFs in Wales are addressing this by extending their reach beyond the world of pharmacy, engaging with patients and wider civic society through charitable events and sponsorship.

Why not get involved in your LPF?

As Julie Davies, recently appointed lead for Cwm Taf LPF, reflected the other day: €This is an exciting time for local practice forums in Wales. There's been a recent injection of energy and enthusiasm.€ There are several reasons for this burst of energy: a new role of local relationships development manager now supports and develops the LPFs; RPS Wales has a clear strategic direction and business plan; and, most importantly, there has been a cohort of new LPF steering group members, full of ideas and drive. So why not get involved in your LPF?

We have established our direction of travel, but need every pharmacist in Wales to join us on this journey to ensure the best pharmaceutical care for the public and patients in Wales
