The GPhC has produced new guidance for tutors of pre-reg pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. 'Guidance on tutoring for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians' provides examples of how to meet key obligations in relation to the standards of conduct, ethics and performance.
The guidance includes a new recommendation that the employer of a pre-reg trainee pharmacy technician should choose a pharmacist or pharmacy technician to act as the trainee's designated educational supervisor (a similar role to that of a pre-reg pharmacist tutor).
The guidance advises all tutors that they should take a number of steps to support their trainees during the training programme, including:
- Inducting the trainee at the beginning of their training so they know what is expected of them and when it is expected
- Discussing what evidence the trainee needs to produce so the tutor can evaluate their performance
- Giving the trainee regular constructive feedback to help them develop during their training
- Taking all reasonable steps to respond to a request for support from the trainee.
Says Duncan Rudkin, pictured, GPhC chief executive: €A trainee's relationship with their tutor is one of the most important professional relationships they will have in their entire career. We know that at the moment pre-registration training can be of variable quality and we want to help to promote improvements in tutoring.€
