MHRA restricts domperidone

The MHRA has announced new restrictions on domperidone, saying it should now be used only to relieve nausea and vomiting, at the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible time.

People with serious underlying heart conditions should not use domperidone and patients should not take it for other conditions, such as heartburn, bloating or stomach discomfort. Adults should take no more than three 10mg tablets per day.

The MHRA has based the new recommendations on a European review triggered by continued reports linking domperidone with cardiac side-effects. The review confirmed €a small increased risk of serious cardiac side-effects€, which was especially high in patients over 60 years of age, those taking daily oral doses of domperidone exceeding 30mg and people taking concomitant QT-prolonging medicines or CYP3A4 inhibitors.
