Care for the preterm infant in the community
Upon discharge from hospital, if formula fed, preterm infants with a suboptimal weight for post-conceptional age (PCA) – the number of weeks of age at birth added to weeks of age since birth – should be given a post-discharge formula such as SMA Gold Prem® 2. ESPGHAN recommends the use of a post-discharge formula until at least 40 weeks PCA. In some cases, post-discharge formulas should possibly be used for up to 52 weeks PCA.22 Post-discharge formulas contain more protein, energy and other nutrients compared with standard formula, to help promote catch-up growth.22
