Managing acne and rosacea

This CPD module covers assessment and clinical decision-making regarding acne and rosacea. It is suitable for use as part of pharmacists’ continuing professional development. After reading this module you can include it in your personal Pharmacy Magazine revalidation record.

After completing this module you will be able to assess skin appearance and relevant history to decide whether to treat or refer cases.

You will be able to briefly summarise current NICE guidance on managing mild to moderate acne and rosacea, and explain how this differs from OTC treatment. You will also be able to provide appropriate advice for patients.

The module aims to help community pharmacists refresh their practice regarding OTC treatments, PGDs or independent prescribing options for these two common skin conditions.

Key facts

  • Acne vulgaris affects the face, upper back and chest, and mainly occurs in those aged 12-24 years
  • Effective treatment is important to avoid scarring
  • Acne treatments take eight to 12 weeks to be fully effective so persistence and good adherence is critical
  • Rosacea is characterised by recurrent episodes of facial flushing, persistent erythema, telangiectasia, papules and pustules (but NOT comedones)
  • Rosacea affects mainly people aged 30-50 years
  • Both acne and rosacea can be causes of serious psychological distress and embarrassment because they affect the face.
