Antibiotic stewardship in community pharmacy

This module focuses on antibiotic stewardship in community pharmacy. It is suitable for use as part of pharmacists’ continuing professional development. After reading this module you can include it in your personal Pharmacy Magazine revalidation record.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global health crisis, causing significant challenges to public health and patient safety.

The aim of this module is to equip community pharmacy teams with the knowledge and tools to support antimicrobial stewardship (AMS), promote appropriate antibiotic use and effectively manage common self-limiting infections, ultimately reducing antimicrobial resistance and improving patient care.

After reading this module you will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of antimicrobial stewardship as part of the Pharmacy First service in England
  • Identify self-limiting infections, their usual duration, and strategies to manage patient expectations of treatment
  • Use consultation frameworks like CHESTSSS to address antibiotic misconceptions and promote responsible use
  • Recommend evidence-based, pragmatic approaches to OTC remedies use within AMS
  • Apply AMS tools, such as the TARGET toolkit, to provide high quality, evidence-based, patient-centred care.
