Just as everyone needs to look after their body, the mind also needs taking care of. Only with good mental health can someone think, feel and react in ways that make life manageable and enjoyable. Suffering with poor mental health can be hugely debilitating but there is now widespread acceptance that mental health disorders cannot and should not be dismissed as someone just feeling a bit low or in a bad mood.

Pharmacists and their teams are focused for the main part on their patients, but with the sector increasingly recognised as a key pillar of primary care, the need for team members to stay well physically and mentally cannot be underestimated. This module aims to equip pharmacists with the knowledge and skills to have what can be difficult conversations with staff members when they are showing signs that all might not be well.

Key facts

  • The mental health of pharmacy team members is just as important as their physical health
  • Concerns that someone’s mental health is deteriorating should be aired rather than ignored, but with sensitivity and in confidence
  • Active listening is key. It is vital to avoid imposing personal experiences or opinions so the person feels safe talking about their feelings
  • Early intervention increases the chance of a good outcome and there are lots of apps, websites and organisations that can help.
