Spiriva Respimat (tiotropium) is now approved as an add-on maintenance bronchodilator for adults with asthma who experienced one or more severe exacerbations in the previous year despite receiving maintenance inhaled steroids (‰¥800mcg budesonide daily or equivalent) and a long-acting beta2-agonist.
Also new is Fostair NEXThaler (beclometasone and formoterol 100/6mcg per actuation) for maintenance treatment of asthma in adults. The NEXThaler confirms the delivery of a full dose in three ways: a 'click' when a dose is released; a distinctive lactose taste; and a counter that decreases after a successful inhalation rather than after priming or loading.
