CORNEA

Refracts light onto the lens, which focuses it onto the retina. The external surface of the cornea is covered by a tear film.

CONJUNCTIVA

A thin membrane that lines the eyelids and covers the front of the eye. It is a highly vascularised membrane containing numerous glands and vessels, whose immune cells play an important protective role - notably with respect to the cornea - which is avascular and unable to defend itself.
