BLEPHARITIS

Blepharitis is a group of eye problems that all feature inflamed eyelid margins. It is a chronic condition that can develop at any age.

THE SYMPTOMS ARE:6

  • Eyelids that are sore, swollen or red-rimmed. The lashes may stick together.
  • Crusty or greasy eyelashes
  • There may be a burning or gritty sensation in the eye
  • Contact lenses may be uncomfortable to wear

In most cases both eyes are affected and the symptoms tend to be worse in the morning.

THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF BLEPHARITIS:

Debris attached to lashes
Inflammation

1. ANTERIOR BLEPHARITIS

is where the inflammation affects the skin around the base of the eyelashes

2. POSTERIOR BLEPHARITIS

is where the inflammation affects the meibomian glands, found along the eyelid margins

3. MIXED BLEPHARITIS

a combination of anterior and posterior blepharitis
