CONDITIONS EXPLAINED: DYSPEPSIA

Symptoms may be acute but in some cases could indicate more serious disease.

Non-ulcer/functional dyspepsia is a term used when no specific medical cause can be found.1 Symptoms include abdominal discomfort such as burning, nausea, bloating and feeling bloated after meals.1

However, these symptoms could also indicate a more serious disease such as peptic ulceration, which may be caused by the bacteria Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) or upper gastrointestinal malignancy, so pharmacists need to be aware of the red flag symptoms to identify patients that need referral to a GP.2

MANAGING SYMPTOMS

As part of NICE guidance,3 pharmacists should offer people with symptoms of dyspepsia initial and ongoing support including:

  1. Lifestyle advice
  2. Recommendations on OTC medication
  3. Reviewing and discussing prescribed medicines
  4. Identifying when a GP should be consulted
