Non-ulcer/functional dyspepsia is a term used when no specific medical cause can be found.² Symptoms include abdominal discomfort such as burning, nausea, bloating and feeling bloated after meals.²

However, these symptoms could also indicate a more serious disease such as peptic ulceration, which may be caused by the bacteria Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) or upper gastrointestinal malignancy, so pharmacists need to be aware of the red flag symptoms to identify patients that need referral to a GP.¹
