As seen in the video, dry eye is essentially caused by a shortage of tears or tear film instability, which is why ‘artificial tears’ are considered a treatment option. There are various types of artificial tears available, including sodium hyaluronate, hypromellose and carbomers.³ The formulations can be categorised based on whether or not they contain preservatives.⁵

Preservatives are added to multidose bottles to discourage the growth of bacteria once the container has been opened. These products may be less suitable for customers with moderate or very dry eyes who require frequent administration, as preservatives could irritate the eyes further.⁵ The prolonged expiry date that the addition of the preservatives offers also makes them better suited for less frequent users. Preservatives can affect soft contact lenses so are not always suitable during their wear.³

If your customer requires administration more than four times a day, PF eye drops may be more suitable.⁵ However, these often come in single-dose vials, which may be less convenient for some.
