Stay as active as possible, as not moving may make the pain worse

Exercises and stretches can help manage and prevent back pain

Applying hot/cold therapy or using anti-inflammatories may offer short-term relief

Red flag symptoms

If customers present with back pain and any of the following symptoms, refer them to their GP:1

  • Numbness or tingling around the genitals or buttocks
  • Difficulty peeing, or loss of control of the bowel/bladder
  • Associated symptoms such as chest pain, a high temperature (fever) or unexplained weight loss
  • Any swelling/deformity
  • If the pain isn't getting better, or is worse at night
  • If the symptoms started after a serious accident.
