CUSTOMER SCENARIO
37-year-old Sylvia has been diagnosed with cystitis. She has mild symptoms so has not received antibiotics through the Pharmacy First service but tells you that she wants something to relieve the pain and burning sensation during urination. She also wants to know if there is anything else she can do to help relieve her symptoms and prevent another infection.
Think about what products and self-care advice you could offer Sylvia, and select which of the following actions you would or would not advise her to take
| SELF-CARE DURING CYSTITIS | DO | DON'T |
|---|---|---|
| Take paracetamol or ibuprofen at regular intervals for pain relief, if suitable5 | ||
| Consider a urine alkaliniser such as CanesOasis® or Cystopurin®, to give relief from burning and stinging symptoms of cystitis | ||
| Drink plenty of fluids (around 6-8 glasses) throughout the day to encourage regular urination5 |
| PREVENTING CYSTITIS | DO | DON'T |
|---|---|---|
| Drink excessive alcohol and caffeine1 | ||
| Have lots of sugary foods or drinks1 | ||
| Wait to pass urine, when there is an urgency to go1 | ||
| Rush when urinating1 | ||
| Wash the external vaginal area with water before and after sex to wash away any bacteria that may be near the urethra opening1 | ||
| Have a shower rather than a bath to avoid exposing the genitals to cleaning products for extended periods1 | ||
| Use scented soap, bubble bath or talcum powder near or in the vagina1 | ||
| Wipe from front (vagina) to back (bottom) after using the toilet to stop bacteria spreading from the bowel to the bladder1 | ||
| Keep the genital area clean and dry | ||
| Change incontinence pads or soiled nappies promptly | ||
| Use spermicide with diaphragms or condoms |
