4.2 Pharmacist and team member roles and competences
A signed Declaration of Competence, the template hosted by CPPE, enables pharmacy professionals who will be providing the service to review and briefly document their existing competences and identify any areas where additional training and CPD are needed (Figure 1). A completed Declaration of Competence framework should be completed at least every two years if providing adult weight management services.
For services where there is an independent pharmacist prescriber involved, the GPhC states:
“Prescribers should be able to demonstrate ongoing competency of prescribing for weight management and prescribe in line with legislation and national guidance. Pharmacist prescribers should follow our guidance, ‘In practice: guidance for pharmacist prescribers’.”
Roles of other pharmacy team members in delivering the service may include:
- Responding to enquiries by phone, messaging or in-person; introducing the service to potential users
- Managing appointments and follow-up contacts
- Conducting follow-ups e.g. weekly phone call
- Measuring height, weight, waist circumference and BP; calculating BMI and waist/height ratio
- Advice and signposting for diet and physical activity
- Making personal links with local relevant activities/facilities.
Pharmacists may wish to develop an additional Declaration of Competence for these and any other specific areas of the service. Organisational aspects also need to be captured and can build on the experience, process and systems used for other pharmacy services involving appointments:
- How will appointments and follow-ups be arranged and recorded?
- Will the service be available in set time periods or throughout pharmacy opening hours?
- What arrangements need to be made for covering staff absences and holidays?
- What information about the service will the pharmacy provide and will this be in printed materials, online or both?
- How will Do Not Attends (DNAs) be dealt with?
- How will the costs to the pharmacy of providing the service be calculated?
- How will the amount charged to service users be decided?
