3.3 Why medicated weight loss needs wraparound care

People usually regain the weight they have lost by about two years after stopping a GLP-1. Around two-thirds of the weight lost while on treatment is regained within the first year after stopping medication.

Given what we now know about weight regain after stopping any pharmacological intervention, additional dietary, physical activity and behavioural strategies alongside prescribing medicines for weight management are essential. With GLP-1s, wraparound care is also crucial during treatment and was included in clinical trials. It was found to be essential in limiting or preventing adverse effects e.g. muscle wastage and bone density loss.

The new NHS pathways that are currently under development are expected to provide patients with access to essential behaviour change support, focusing on nutrition and physical activity, and where appropriate psychological support to ensure overall wellbeing.
