Warning for locum pharmacist who removed diazepam from stock

The General Pharmaceutical Council has issued a warning to a locum pharmacist who took diazepam and omeprazole without paying for them while acting as responsible pharmacist.

Vivienne Anokwuru was seen on CCTV removing medicines from the stock of Anstey Road Pharmacy in Alton on three dates in May and June 2023.

When the superintendent spoke to her she initially denied the alleged thefts, before making an admission when she was told they had been captured on CCTV.

The fitness to practise committee found her dishonesty was “at the lower end of the scale” as she had taken “a limited quantity of medication in order to deal with symptoms she was experiencing at work” without any financial motive.

The committee noted that she had an otherwise unblemished career since joining the register in the 1990s and that she has worked without issue since the events in question.

The FtP committee also found Ms Anokwuru “had demonstrated remorse and had provided substantial written reflections that directly addressed the issues in this case and the CPD she had undertaken to strengthen her practice”.

It concluded that a warning would be sufficient to address her misconduct.

The warning, which will appear on Ms Anokwuru’s registry entry until May 12, 2027, reminds her of the importance of being honest with employers when facing challenge and of the need to treat her “privileged access to medicines” with respect.
