Profile: Lec Medical

So many products used nowadays in business are manufactured overseas but for Lec Medical, based in North Wales, there is an unwavering desire to reinforce the British manufacturing base, reports Martin Richmond.

Lec Medical specialises in the production of fridges and freezers for pharmacies, laboratories and hospital wards. In 2014, the company purchased a 45,000 square foot industrial unit in Buckley, North Wales, which led to significant growth and the creation of 50 new manufacturing jobs. There are plans for further expansion next year.

One of the main arms of manufacturing is the production of fridges that meet MHRA guidelines. As well as enabling operators to monitor minimum and maximum temperatures daily, the fridges are fitted with locks to ensure safe storage of supplies and come with alerts and alarms.

New range

This month sees the company launching its new Control range of fridges, which possess extremely accurate temperature monitoring. Users will also be able to decide whether to display the air temperature or the core temperature of their fridge.

The fridges will be fitted with alarms that will operate from an air probe, giving the user sufficient warning to react before the core temperature falls to ensure that the drugs stored inside are not wasted. With vaccines costing the NHS around £200 million a year, the loss of one dose of Pediacel vaccine a month in each general practice would cost an estimated £4 million a year.

Made in Britain

Lec Medical is a committed member of the Made in Great Britain Campaign, which promotes British manufacturing and enables customers to clearly identify British-made products. The company believes the campaign makes a real difference to customers. If they know the products they are looking at are made in Britain, it would ultimately persuade them to buy British-made products, says Lec.
