A further 200,000 Support Your Local Pharmacy petitions are to be sent to Downing Street today (July 1), bringing the total to two million signatures.
In a covering letter to the Prime Minister, pharmacy leaders warn: €Decisions taken in the next few weeks could have irreversible consequences for patients and communities up and down the country. The current circumstances within Government provide an opportunity to reconsider [Department of Health] proposals, to ensure that your Ministers do not set into motion a chain of events leading to the closure of community pharmacies up and down the country.€
The Department of Health's consultation on 'Community Pharmacy in 2016/17 and Beyond' ended on May 24. The proposals include cuts to funding for local pharmacy services and moves to encourage the online supply of medicines. The Department's official response to the consultation is expected within weeks.
