The University of Hertfordshire has created a support network for pharmacists in England who supervise foundation trainees to allow them to share their experiences and challenges with peers.
The university told Independent Community Pharmacist it is piloting the Community of Practice (CoP) network to offer pharmacy supervisors in community pharmacy as well as in GP practices "a place to share ideas and seek support in a safe space”.
“(The) research study (will examine) whether this a viable and sustainable approach to supporting foundation trainee pharmacist supervisors and assess what works well and for who,” the university said.
The network, which is also open to designated prescribing practitioners (DPPs) who are supervising trainee pharmacists, will hold bi-monthly virtual meetings, online discussions and “problem-solving deliberations”.
The University of Hertfordshire has launched the network in collaboration with the educational start-up company Padlet, which is headquartered in California.
“It is hoped the CoP will help address some of the unique challenges facing foundation trainees pharmacist supervisors, including isolation, uncertainty about programme requirements and limited capacity due to the prioritisation of clinical services delivery,” the university said.
Research lead and principal lecturer in clinical pharmacy at the University of Hertfordshire, Dr Nikkie Umaru, said: “Supervising a foundation trainee pharmacist is incredibly rewarding, but navigating its unique challenges shouldn't be done in isolation, so we have set up the Community of Practice to provide support.
“This informal, collaborative network brings together FTP supervisors to learn, share experiences, and benchmark their practices through regular peer exchange.
“Joining this community offers a powerful opportunity for supervisors to build their capabilities and embed continuous active reflection into their supervision practice.”
Trainee supervisors or DPPs have until November 18 to register to join the network.
