NICE recommends glycopyrronium cream as an option for hyperhidrosis

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has recommended glycopyrronium bromide (GPB) cream as a treatment option for adults with severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis (PAHH) if lifestyle advice, topical aluminium-based antiperspirants and oral antimuscarinics have not controlled underarm sweating, or if they are contraindicated or not tolerated.

According to the manufacturer of Axhidrox (glycopyrronium) cream, this is the first time NICE has evaluated and recommended a treatment option specifically for hyperhidrosis.

Hyperhidrosis is estimated to affect between 1% and 5% of the population and can have a substantial impact on daily activities, social interactions, emotional wellbeing and quality of life. It occurs when overactivity within the sympathetic nervous system causes excessive stimulation of sweat glands. GPB cream is designed to block the signalling pathway that activates the sweat glands, helping to reduce excessive sweating

Richard Baderin, managing director, axunio UK said: "Hyperhidrosis can have a profound impact on many aspects of daily life, yet treatment options have historically been limited. The NICE recommendation for GPB cream represents an important milestone for adults living with severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis and provides access to the UK's only licensed topical anticholinergic treatment for this condition."

Treatment instructions

The recommended dosage of Axhidrox is two pump actuations per armpit (equivalent to 540 mg of cream or 4.4 mg glycopyrronium per armpit). After priming, the pump must be pressed down all the way twice to get the desired dose of 540 mg cream (4.4 mg glycopyrronium).

During the first 4 weeks of treatment, Axhidrox is applied to each armpit evenly, once a day, preferably in the evening.

From the 5th week on, the frequency of application of Axhidrox may be reduced to twice a week, depending on the reduction of axillary sweating.

Continuous treatment of primary axillary hyperhidrosis with Axhidrox is required to maintain the effect.
