Coeliac UK is hoping to find many of the half a million people living with undiagnosed coeliac disease through its first ever television commercial, airing this month.
Around nine million viewers are expected to see the advert, which features a voiceover by actress and Coeliac UK patron, Caroline Quentin, who has been recently diagnosed with the disease.
Produced with a grant from Thermo Fisher Scientific, the 30-second advert will be played across a range of channels including ITV, Sky 1 and Dave.
The commercial is part of the charity's 'Is it coeliac disease?' campaign, which highlights some of the most common symptoms of coeliac disease, and encourages people experiencing them to complete a questionnaire via the website: isitcoeliacdisease.org.uk
Sarah Sleet, chief executive of Coeliac UK said: €With half a million people living with undiagnosed coeliac disease we must take radical action to turn around this horrendous situation. We are thrilled to have received this grant from Thermo Fisher Scientific to allow us to reach millions of viewers and hope put thousands suffering with symptoms on a pathway to diagnosis to avoid potentially life threatening long term health complications.
"If you think you may have coeliac disease, go to your doctor and ask for a blood test but don't stop eating gluten until you are tested otherwise critical follow up tests will not work.€
The campaign will also be targeting people through information in GP surgeries and community pharmacies, radio and digital advertising and social media. Free materials can be downloaded via: isitcoeliacdisease.org.uk.
