London pharmacies aim to vaccinate 100,000

Community pharmacies in London are looking to vaccinate 100,000 people against flu over the next five months €“ a 25 per cent increase on the 76,000 Londoners who were vaccinated against seasonal flu in their local pharmacies last winter.

The London-wide service is available to any eligible person living, working or being educated in London's 32 boroughs and the City of London. The service is particularly useful for those members of the public who do not work close to their GP surgery or who have little interaction with their GP, says Pharmacy Voice.

With a high proportion of Londoners not registered with a GP, community pharmacy is well placed to offer an accessible point of contact for 'at risk' members of the public to receive their free flu jab, without an appointment. Last year more than 2,000 jabs were given to patients who were in a clinical risk group but not registered with a GP.

Jabs for all

Healthy adults are also being urged to get vaccinated following new research by LloydsPharmacy, which shows that just one person with flu can cause nearly 16,500 other people to become infected within two weeks.

It's not just vulnerable people who should get a flu vaccination, says Nitin Makadia of LloydsPharmacy. €We are calling on people who won't necessarily be given a flu vaccination by their doctor but who can inadvertently spread flu to people in their homes and communities, their workplaces and on public transport.

€These people have the power to become the front line of defence in the fight against this nasty virus and form a shield around their communities by getting vaccinated before the season hits.€
