General Pharmaceutical Council appoints new chair

The General Pharmaceutical Council has appointed Gisela Abbam, who has extensive experience in the health and life sciences sector and the formulation of public policy, as its new chair.

Ms Abbam, who assumes the role at the regulator on March 14, takes over from Nigel Clarke who is stepping down after eight years.

She previously chaired the British Science Association, where she spearheaded its attempt to improve equality, diversity and inclusion in science, technology, engineering and maths.

She has held senior positions in a number of healthcare companies, helping scientists and researchers improve the diagnosis of diseases, discover new personalised drugs and monitor the safety and quality of food.

She is also a board member of Everywoman Ltd, which promotes the roles of women in business, has worked alongside the World Health Organisation and was a member of the first leadership team that set up the Centre for Public Health Excellence at NICE.

“I am delighted and honoured to be appointed as the new chair of the General Pharmaceutical Council and I look forward to leading the Council to achieve its vision of safe and effective pharmacy care at the heart of healthier communities,” Ms Abbam said.

“Covid-19 highlighted the increased role of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacies in providing clinical services. Effective standards and regulation can help pharmacy to provide more support to patients and the public at large.

"I look forward to working with Council, the executive team and staff and collaborating with other organisations to improve the health of people using pharmacy services.”

Mr Clarke said Ms Abbam’s “vast experience in healthcare will help the GPhC drive forward the aims set out” in its Vision 2030 which seeks to improve care provided by pharmacies through advances in science and technology and the integration of health and social care.
