Pharmacist Support demand soars as pharmacy profession faces burnout

Esther Sadler-Williams, chair of trustees at Pharmacist Support

Pharmacist Support is continuing to expand its reach and wellbeing support services to help pharmacists, trainees and students navigate challenges relating to mental health, financial difficulty, workplace wellbeing and the pressures of study and training.

The charity's Impact report 2025 includes results from its latest wellbeing survey which shows that 87% of respondents are at high risk of burnout.

The 2024 survey which received a total of 6,598 responses from pharmacists (67%), pharmacy technicians (30%), and trainee pharmacists or MPharm students (3%) also found 61% of respondents had considered leaving their current role or the profession within the last year.

During 2025 the charity processed 438 applications for financial assistance, distributed £171,438 in grants, handled 1,032 enquiries through it's support services, and funded 700 counselling sessions – an increase of 59% compared with 2024.

Over the past year the organisation also:

  • Achieved a 149% increase in ACTNow campaign sign-ups, with more than 8,000 registrations across its wellbeing campaigns
  • Recorded a 156% increase in visits to its website
  • Received a record 88 applications to its Student Bursary Scheme
  • Achieved a 90% positive wellbeing impact rating among service users and a 95% likelihood of beneficiaries returning for support if needed in the future.

The charity also launched several new initiatives during the year, including a comprehensive financial wellbeing programme developed in partnership with Rebel Finance School, a new nationwide Walk for Wellbeing community fundraising campaign and the official launch of its A Dose of Wellbeing podcast following a successful pilot.

Esther Sadler-Williams, chair of trustees at Pharmacist Support, said: "The latest Workforce Wellbeing Survey serves as a clear reminder that the pressures facing our pharmacy family remain significant, with 87% of respondents at high risk of burnout. While we are encouraged that more people than ever reached out to us for support in 2025, the figures only tell part of the story.

"This year, two beneficiaries joined one of our Board meetings to share their experiences. Hearing directly how our support had helped them navigate some of the most challenging moments in their lives was incredibly moving and served as a powerful reminder that behind every enquiry, counselling session and grant awarded is a person with their own story.

"We are proud of what has been achieved, but the need for our work has never been clearer. We remain committed to ensuring every member of our pharmacy family knows they have somewhere to turn and can access the support they need, when they need it."
