  • Help to select a suitable sunscreen product in an acceptable price range for most customers

  • Advise on avoiding sunburn, especially in children and young adults, to reduce the risk of skin cancer in later life
  • Check awareness of vitamin D requirements and advise on supplements
  • Everyone, especially people with a previous history of skin cancer, should monitor their skin regularly. The Euromelanoma website has a good guide, with pictures and tips4
  • If a patient thinks he/she has a growing mole, work through the ABCDE checklist with them and suggest serial photos to see if it changes. Including an item of standard size next to the mole (e.g. 20p coin) is helpful to see if it has grown or changed shape
  • Obtain information leaflets and posters, and familiarise staff with the material available at key websites (e.g. Skcin; SunSafe campaign for schools and workplaces: Sun safe schools / Sun safe workplaces)
