Identification and management of hypertension

This module focuses on the identification and management of hypertension in community pharmacy. It is suitable for use as part of pharmacists’ continuing professional development. After reading this module you can include it in your personal Pharmacy Magazine revalidation record.

This module will explore the role community pharmacists can play in improving outcomes in the identification and management of hypertension.

It will consider current roles and how the expansion of independent prescribing will provide further opportunities for community pharmacy in the management of people living with the disease.

Identification and treatment of hypertension was flagged as a priority in the NHS Long Term Plan (January 2019) and a more recent review by NHS England also highlighted the role that community pharmacy can play. With the roll-out of pharmacist independent prescribing, there is the potential for further involvement in managing hypertension.

After reading this module you will be able to:

  • Identify the role community pharmacy teams can play in identifying those patients who have suspected hypertension
  • Discuss how schemes such as blood pressure checks and the New Medicine Service improve outcomes by identifying patients with hypertension, supporting adherence to treatment and encouraging lifestyle changes
  • Explain how pharmacist independent prescribing may provide further opportunities for community pharmacy to manage patients with hypertension.
