Tools and frameworks
Several resources are available to support community pharmacy teams in implementing AMS principles:
- TARGET toolkit: Developed by the UK Health Security Agency (formerly Public Health England), the TARGET (Treat Antibiotics Responsibly, Guidance, Education, Tools) toolkit provides a range of resources, including patient leaflets and guidance on appropriate antibiotic prescribing
- CHESTSSS framework: This communication framework helps pharmacists understand and respond to patient beliefs about antibiotics, ensuring consultations are person-centred and evidence-based
- Treating Your Infection leaflet: Designed to inform patients about infection durations and self-care, this practical tool for AMS consultations forms part of the TARGET toolkit
- TARGET antibiotic checklist: For use by community pharmacy teams for patients/carers collecting antibiotics
- TARGET antibiotic prescription screening and counselling sheet is designed to help support the information provided to patients, including how to take antibiotics and their common side-effects. This sheet summarises information from the British National Formulary and Electronic Medicines Compendium and can support pharmacy teams and other healthcare professionals when screening an antibiotic prescription.
- Many of these resources are summarised in the video at youtu.be/wgqgqZIv8n4?si= LtwLAbvw-JVGVXHl. By incorporating these tools into their practice, community pharmacists and their teams can ensure consistent messaging and enhance their role in AMS.
Reflection exercise
How would you brief your team to provide consistent, evidence-based AMS messages when handling patient queries? What tools or resources would you use to support this?
