Scale of the problem
Non-adherence in hypertension patients has an impact on patient health and the healthcare system, as well as causing an economic loss to society.
In some cases the patient may have no symptoms related to their hypertension but may be experiencing side effects from their treatment, resulting in non-compliance. By demonstrating the benefits of using their medicines correctly (e.g. monitoring their blood pressure and seeing a reduction) you can help improve adherence with their medication.
Why don’t some patients take their medicines as prescribed?
- Intentional non-adherence
Intentional non-adherence occurs when the patient decides not to follow the treatment recommendations. This may be due to their beliefs or preferences. - Unintentional non-adherence
Unintentional non-adherence occurs when patients wish to follow a treatment programme but are prevented from doing so by factors beyond their control, including difficulties understanding instructions or problems with treatment.
Therefore the interventions you make are vital in helping to ensure that patients comply with their medication.
