Each 2mmHg rise in systolic blood pressure is associated with increased risk of mortality – a seven per cent increased risk of heart disease and 10 per cent increased risk of stroke.1 Therefore, the aim must be to lower blood pressure and cardiovascular risk together. The table below lists the possible reductions in blood pressure when certain lifestyle interventions are made.2
