Fibre plays a number of important roles in digestion, helping form stools, remove toxins and provide a food source for beneficial species of bacteria in the gut. Increasing fruit and vegetable intake and taking a gentle fibre supplement such as Lepicol, a 3-in-1 combination of psyllium husk fibre (which contributes to the maintenance of normal bowel transit), five live bacterial strains (to help rebalance gut microflora) and the prebiotic, inulin, should therefore be recommended, says Probiotics International.

A liquid version has been added to the Rennie line-up. The launch of Rennie Liquid Heartburn Relief oral suspension is in response to the fact that many people treat their symptoms with both tablet and liquid formats, says Bayer. The suspension contains sodium alginate and forms a protective layer on the stomach contents to prevent stomach acids escaping into the oesophagus, the company says. In a sugar-free mint flavour the liquid is available in two pack sizes: 150ml, (£3.99) and 250ml (£5.49).
