New organisation formed to support veterinary pharmacy

The Veterinary Pharmacy Association is a new professional multidisciplinary organisation to promote and support the practice of veterinary pharmacy by all veterinary health care providers.

Launched earlier this month, the association will seek to highlight the role of veterinary pharmacy by promoting excellence in the safe, effective and appropriate use of medication in animals, so improving animal health and well-being. It will also raise awareness of public health implications arising from contact between humans and animals and facilitate accredited training and continuing professional development.

Rob Morris, chair of the RPS Veterinary Pharmacy Forum, said: “I am delighted that we now have an association dedicated to veterinary pharmacy. It will benefit interested pharmacists and allied professionals to be involved. The association aims to promote excellence and education in this specialised field of pharmacy and I look forward to welcoming new members.”

Offering congratulations on the launch, the head of Harper Adams University, Animal Production, Welfare and Veterinary Sciences Department, Carwyn Ellis, said: “The university is delighted to be associated with the Veterinary Pharmacy Association. I welcome the fact that VPA support will be available to all veterinary health providers involved in the production and supply of veterinary medicinal products.”

Harper Adams University runs the Veterinary Pharmacy Education Programme.
