Campaign puts spotlight on bronchiolitis

Biopharmaceutical company, AbbVie, has re-launched its 'More Than a Cold' campaign this winter to raise awareness of bronchiolitis – a common viral lung infection affecting babies and young children.

Caused by the human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), bronchiolitis is the most common cause of hospital admissions in babies, with up to three per cent of infants admitted to hospital with the infection. One in three infants develop the infection before their first birthday, yet half of parents of children under five are unaware of the illness, according to research conducted by AbbVie in 2015.

In June this year, NICE updated its guidance on managing bronchiolits in babies and young children, encouraging parents to manage the symptoms, which are usually mild, at home and stating that antibiotics should not be used as treatment.

Launching today (3 October), the 2016 More Than a Cold campaign provides practical advice and materials for parents and healthcare professionals about managing the infection and how to prevent it.

Developed and funded by AbbVie, the campaign is supported by seven charities: Bliss, the British Lung Foundation, the National Childbirth Trust, the Twins and Multiple Births Association, Tiny Tickers, Tiny Lives and WellChild.
