Repeat dispensing

CPPE has developed a new e-learning programme on repeat dispensing

Repeat dispensing has been an essential service within the community pharmacy contractual framework since 2005. As many as two-thirds of all prescriptions are for repeat supplies of regular medicines and could be suitable for repeat dispensing. However uptake of this service is still very low. In September 2014 PSNC announced that there will be a new requirement for pharmacies to give advice to appropriate patients about the benefits of the repeat dispensing service. More information about this can be found on the PSNC website (psnc.org.uk).

What’s expected?

Community pharmacists will be expected to engage with their local prescribers, CCGs, local professional networks and LPCs, and actively promote repeat dispensing using activities to increase uptake by prescribers (by helping identify suitable patients) and to explain the service and its many benefits to patients. But what can you do? The repeat dispensing service has evolved. Are you up-to-date with the changes? With this in mind, CPPE has developed a new e-learning programme to support community pharmacists to:

  • Provide a safe and efficient repeat dispensing service
  • Explain repeat dispensing and its benefits to patients and prescribers
  • Use paper-based and electronic repeat dispensing.

The programme, which is suitable for the whole pharmacy team, guides users through the use of paper- based and electronic repeat dispensing, using interactive activities including videos and case studies.

New information

It includes new information about electronic repeat dispensing, so even those who have completed training in this area will benefit from the programme, which has been designed to be used individually or with the pharmacy team as a whole. To access this e-learning programme, visit the CPPE website.
