Painkillers better for sore throat, says NICE

Sore throat sufferers are better off taking OTC analgesics, while lozenges make little difference to symptoms, according to NICE.

The medicines watchdog says too many patients are still being prescribed antibiotics when they are suffering from a virus which the drugs cannot treat, fuelling resistance fears.

Research shows six in ten patients visiting their GP with a sore throat are prescribed antibiotics. Patients should take paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain relief instead, says NICE.
