New website highlights Peyronie's disease

A new website has launched to help the approximately one million men in the UK who suffer from Peyronie’s disease.

Peyronie’s disease causes the erect penis to bend because of an abnormal plaque of collagen under the skin. The bend can make penetrative sex difficult or impossible and as a result can have a huge impact on emotional and psychological wellbeing, with half of affected men suffering from depression and relationship problems, according to research.

The website - thisispeyronies.co.uk - has been devised by international healthcare company Sobi to provide information, support and advice on treatment options to men with the disease.

Peyronie’s is commonly diagnosed between the ages of 40 and 60 and affects around one in 20 men in the UK, although this figure is thought to be an underestimate because the disease is greatly underreported.

The website launch coincides with Men's Health Week (13-19 June) and a national awareness campaign #StandUpforPeyronies run by the British Dupuytren’s Society.

David Ralph, consultant urologist at the Institute of Urology in London said: "There is very little information out there about Peyronie’s disease so we hope this website will help men with the condition at whatever stage of their journey."
