New way to check NHS payments

Uncertainty over NHS payments could be a thing of the past thanks to the launch of a new online system enabling community pharmacy contractors to analyse their monthly prescription payments.

Check34 uses data and processes derived from prescription audit work carried out on behalf of contractors by PSNC, which has developed the application. As well as allowing pharmacists to view trends for a number of key performance indicators, including items dispensed per month, average item value, switched prescriptions, expensive items, and completed MUR and NMS consultations, the application makes it possible for individual FP34C data to be compared with regional and national figures.

All NPA members will be able to access Check34 free of charge for at least the next 12 months thanks to a deal the organisation has struck with PSNC. The NPA has stated its aim to have all eligible pharmacies subscribed by autumn. Non-NPA member independents and Company Chemists' Association (CCA) member companies are able to take out an annual subscription by contacting the NPA or PSNC directly.

PSNC Check34’s project manager, Patrick Grice, said the IT platform would give contractors “a better understanding of their businesses as well as more visibility around NHS payments”. He added: “This may be the first opportunity they have had to analyse and interpret their payments data in such a useful way.”

NPA chairman and pharmacy proprietor Ian Strachan described Check34 as “of huge practical benefit”, commenting: “It is important for us to be in control of our business processes and planning, as well as to be certain that we are being accurately remunerated by the NHS.”
